Before & After School Child Care Programs

Background

The legislation that allows school boards to deliver Before & After School Care in Kindergarten classrooms represent a shift in the way child care and early learning is provided and accessed in Ontario.

The current way child care is provided could be described as a patchwork of availability, access, and services – not all children receive the same type of care and not all parents have access to child care in the convenience of the school setting.

In a 2009 report entitled With our Best Future in Mind, researcher Dr. Charles Pascal created the framework adopted by the Ontario government intended to deliver more opportunities to Ontario’s most precious and vulnerable resource – our children. The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) supports this vision for early learning, and is working to implement it in our communities.

It is important to note that the 2009 legislative changes direct school boards to provide before and after school programs in viable school communities. The role of Trustees is to approve the program fees.
